week 7 - studio task

Part 1:

UNstudio Brief

Architect - Ben van Berkel

  • Dutch nationality -  born in Utrecht, Netherlands
  • Formed UNstudio with his wife Caroline Cos
  • Architectural style based on their design technique of 'Attainable design' which practices sustainability on economical and ecological issues. 'Attainable design' was based on the play of words of 'affordable' and 'sustainable'
Part 2:

Ben van Berkel and Caroline Cos are the co-founders of UNstudio. This brief will be based on the design of a house which are based on their ideas and design methods.

The living room will be one of the fundamentals in the house since it will be used as semi-private and semi-public space. However Berkel also states that the kitchen also fits this criteria as he thinks its the most important area in the house in which he says "You don't just cook there; you can sit down and relax." So I would like to put the main focus on the kitchen as a starting point.

Update 9/13/13:  I came to a realization that the dimensions in my sketchup model were incorrect during the studio when we had to import our building into Luminon. When I imported it was huge, so I found out going back to the Sketchup file, the problem was that my units was all in meters not in millimeters. I don't know why it changed to meters since it was in millimeters by default.
