Studio Research - Week 3

Presentation boards

  • This scheme works very well since its a concept of a building on the ocean so whats very good about this is it takes the concept back and uses it on the poster with its blue colors. Nice diagrams on the bottom gets the attention straightaway whilst all the info are standalone on the sides.

  • A nice layout which contains all the necessarily information however it might gone overboard it terms of the map since it takes up a lot of space which can be replaced with other things that are relevant to this poster.

  • A grey scale scheme works well with the model and diagrams of the building. The slight touch of green added might have disrupted consistency. But it does help separate itself from the grey scale colors as it brightens the poster which straight always draws your attention.

model 3 - folding more papers

The 3rd model I wanted to be based on combined buildings of UNstudio. This time we had a bit more freedom since we can combine, cut or tape our A4 sheets of models.

The buildings are the Youturn Pavilion and World Horticultural Expo Pavilion. These shapes closely resemble the previous buildings that I folded.

The shapes from this model were basically from the previous 2 models combined with a new A4 model that was made to interconnect with each other.

Battersea Weave Office Building - Folding papers

Theatre Agora - Folding papers

This weeks task is quite interesting since we are to make an abstract of architecture using one A4 sheet of paper. The two designs I made are based on architecture designed by UNstudio.

As soon as I saw this building, it looked quite simple to be folded in A4 however it wasn't meant to be as precise edges and folds are to be made to make the triangular shapes.

Paper model

The folding techniques I mainly used was creating pleats which would form into those triangular shapes

Design Influence

Which one?

This list of architects, designers and artists, it is quite hard to pick only one from all these amazing people since all their work are outstanding. After going through each one, I decided to choose an architecture firm instead of the individuals listed since the firms were fairly modern and shares a same design process and ethic as a group not just by one person. So it was down to the firms of: Coop Himmelb(l)au, UNstudio and Studio Gang Architects. In the end I decided to go with Dutch architectural practice UNstudio since not only they do architectural but also urban development and infrastructural projects.

UNstudio:

The buildings designed by UNstudio contain a very modern and futuristic look to them whilst keeping a sustainable design that includes the initial stages of economic, social and ecological sustainability. These fundamentals led to UNstudio describing this process they came up with as 'Attainable design'.

What I like UNstudio about is their complex and detailed methods of planning out their designs in architecture. These include time, use, circulation, material, virtual and visualization systems are all collected together to achieve their integral methodology. UNstudio is also one of the leading practices in the world known for their dedication to researching new ways to improve architecture.

There were many buildings that appealed to me that were designed by UNstudio but the one that stood out the most to me was the  Yongjia World Trade Center. It was recently won by UNstudio as a competition in China and what I like about this building is the shapes and materials as it stack on to each other. It also reminded me of the apartment design assignment I had to do in last semester for the 3DS Max modelling course.

Week 1 - 3D sketches

3D drawings using 2D elevations

Coming into this task is quite taunting since we had to visuise in our heads of what something in 2D would look like in 3D however our group had it easy compared to the other two groups since we were given elevation details so these shapes can be easily sketched in 3D format but the problem is sometimes you can't see some details in elevation drawings since they only provide you with 2D images.

Sketching is not one of my strengths as I had a limited experience, it took me almost a hour just to complete one drawing since I was over thinking what the task was about but in the end time was running out so I sketched what I can. I can visiulate what the shapes of the buildings in my head look like but when sketching them with a pencil I found it quite difficult with all the little details.

The section cuts didn't give much of the building and it wasn't necessary to our task since we meant to draw the exterior not interior.
